Understanding Saudi Work Authorization
Saudi Arabia's work authorization system involves multiple steps: obtaining a work visa (block visa), converting it to an Iqama (residency permit), and maintaining compliance with Saudization requirements under the Nitaqat program.
Types of Work Visas
Block Visa (Work Visa)
Companies must first obtain block visas from the Ministry of Human Resources. The number of visas allocated depends on your Nitaqat classification and business needs.
Business Visit Visa
For short-term business activities (up to 90 days). Can be single or multiple entry. Not for employment.
Premium Residency (Golden Visa)
For qualified investors and professionals. Does not require employer sponsorship.
Iqama (Residency Permit)
The Iqama is your Saudi residency card. Once a foreign employee arrives on a work visa, the employer must convert it to an Iqama within 90 days. The Iqama:
- Must be renewed annually
- Includes your occupation, employer details, and personal information
- Is required for daily life — bank accounts, car rentals, etc.
- Can be monitored through Absher and Muqeem portals
Nitaqat (Saudization) Program
The Nitaqat program requires companies to employ a minimum percentage of Saudi nationals. Your company's classification (Platinum, Green, Yellow, Red) determines:
- Number of work visas you can obtain
- Ability to transfer sponsorship
- Access to government services
Key Requirements for Work Permits
- Valid MISA license and CR
- Registered with GOSI (social insurance)
- Subscribed to Medical Insurance Council approved plan
- Nitaqat compliance (Green zone minimum)
- No outstanding violations
